What is the difference between photograph and a snapshot?
The difference between a photograph and a snapshot is that photographs are staged, while a snapshot is just a moment in time that got captured.
Photograph
This is a photograph, because the photographer intentionally got this exact image. They included everything in the picture on purpose, because they knew how they wanted it to turn out.
Snapshot
This is a snapshot because the photographer didn't necessarily know exactly how the photo would turn out, they were just trying to capture this nice moment.
Response to James Nachtwey
Is the work of James Nachtwey snapshots or photography? His work is snapshots.
What does he say about anger? He says that he captures his anger through his photos.
Did you notice visual irony in his images? I don't think I noticed visual irony in his photo because the messages he was trying to convey, he did.
What is life like for him? For his subjects? He gets put in lots of tough situations, because he has to spend a lot of time watching people struggle to survive, and most of the time he can't do much.
How does he do justice for the people he photographs? He publishes stories, which make people want to help, and a lot of the time, help is sent.
What is key to his work that makes it extraordinary and award winning? The emotion in his pictures is what makes it award winning, because he captures real emotion, and almost all of it isn't staged.
Why does he do what he does? He does what he does because he believes that it pays off.
What was most striking to you about the video and his work? Why? If nothing, why not? What was most striking to me was the severity of the conditions he was put in. It's weird to think about the people that see more of the inside story, because a lot of the time they're not necessarily there to one-on-one help people.
Why do you think he shoots mostly black and white? I think he shoots mostly black and white because it's dramatic. If he shot color, there would be more things to focus on, and black and white is specific to the drama.
